Spacewreck (1979)

The 1979 book Spacewreck: Ghostships and Derelicts of Space by Stewart Cowley explores the "history" of spacecrafts and their demise from the perspective of the (paleo)future.

Thanks to everyone who suggested finding this wonderful book. We'll be looking at this book in more detail in the coming weeks.

I owned "spacecraft 2000-2100" and always wanted this one. I still remember exactly where it was in thte public library; I'd read it pretty much every time I was there.

Three years ago I found a copy on e-Bay for $9 plus shipping. According to abebooks.com, prices start at $40. hee!

The writing is pretty good and the images, as ususal are phenomenal. Now, I just have to find a copy of the highly sought-after 'Starliners'...

Funny -- I had no issue finding a nice used copie of "Starliners" but I can't find a decently priced "Spacewrecks!" :)

I loved this and the "Spacecraft 2000-2100" book. Something about these spaceships, re-reading the books again and again as a teen. Great memories.

Thanks for this post. This was my favourite of this series. I always used to get this eerie feeling after browsing through it which led my preadolescent mind sort of prematurely into a lot of existential questioning about death and impermanence. There are a lot of things I never would have thought and done had I not spent hours contemplating these images and stories. My copy was sadly destroyed in a flood. I should probably get around to replacing it.
